Training in Biobank Management at the Institute of Molecular Medicine, Portugal

From the 11th to the 19th of September this year, a Researcher at the Biotechnology Center of the Eduardo Mondlane University (CBUEM), Nídia Cangi, carried out a professional visit and advanced course on “Biobanks: enhance health research”.


The training took place as part of the ongoing implementation of the Animal Biodiversity Biobank at CB-UEM and the Natural History Museum (MHN). The course was organized by the Centro Académico de Medicina de Lisboa (CAML), through the Biobank of the Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), and aimed to train participants in matters of: I) Theoretical and technical domains on the implementation of biobanks; II) Raise awareness about the activities of biobanks; III) Implementation of good practices and IV) Recognize the main ethical and social issues regarding Biobanks
This course provided training on the collection of biological samples, preservation and storage of information, as well as good practices and ethical and social issues involved in Biobank samples.
The training allowed the creation of areas in the theme of Biobanks as repositories of biological samples, constituting a benefit for the country with a view to preserving, valuing genetic resources and their proper description.
